The best cover material for your composting toilet
Miscanthus, which is also called Chinese silver grass, fully convinced us in our field tests and is therefore our preferred litter for composting toilets. Miscanthus litter does a great job of keeping unpleasant odors at bay. The reason: This type of litter is extremely absorbent. It effectively removes moisture so that the solid waste dries faster and odors dissipate quickly. Another big advantage is that our miscanthus is grown regionally and ecologically and is processed into litter in a climate-neutral way.
Before using the toilet for the very first time, or after emptying it, place 2 to 3 handfuls of the eco-friendly Miscanthus litter in the empty bag lining the solids bucket. This creates a solid, absorbent layer. After going number 2, add another layer of Miscanthus to speed up the drying process and prevent the solid waste from smelling bad.
17 liters of Miscanthus are enough for about 28 times.
Our organic cover material is fully compostable, which means that you can safely compost the entire contents of your solids bucket (bag, solids and litter). The decomposition process naturally takes a year or two, but after that your garden will benefit from fertile humus soil. Of course, you can also dispose of the bag, solids and litter in the garbage can for residual waste.
Miscanthus has a pleasant and subtle smell similar to straw. The shredded pieces, which are between 1 and 3 cm (0.4 to 1.2 in) long, do not contain mold spores and are dust-free because they have already been sifted. Therefore, unlike other types of cover material, it is also suitable for people with allergies.
Elephant grass originated in China but is now also grown elsewhere. The fast-growing Miscanthus plants used for our cover material are grown locally and without any pesticides and fertilizers. Once planted, they are harvested for up to 20 years. Only the top meter is cut. The rest of the time, the plants provide a home for insects and wildlife — making an important contribution to biodiversity conservation.
